![]() The song has continued to enjoy a strong afterlife. The promo also enjoyed strong airplay on the dominant music-video channels, creating greater momentum in smaller markets across the globe. Ordinary World’s video, directed by the wider album project’s creative lead, Nick Egan, saw the now four-piece (drummer Roger Taylor remained on lengthy hiatus, leaving just Le Bon, Cuccurullo, keyboardist Nick Rhodes and bassist John Taylor on board) filmed in a studio and on location at Huntingdon Gardens, in San Marino, California. Duran Duran were back, match-fit and ready to enjoy their most successful year in more than half a decade. Ahead of that, Ordinary World, which had been given official release on 19 December 1992, peaked at No.3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No.6 in the UK. Momentum built and the growing success saw Duran Duran’s self-titled album rise to priority scheduling. Ordinary World was allegedly leaked (or cleverly marketed) by the band’s stateside label, and a radio station in Florida seized on the recording in a big way, putting it on heavy rotation from the get-go. ![]() His masterful guitar riff anchored the song somewhere between all-out pop and the melodic rock direction the group followed across the other 12 tracks that would make up their new album, which also included the big hit Come Undone.Īs in all good stories, there’s a twist. Guitarist Warren Cuccurullo, who had been drafted in to replace Andy Taylor in 1986 and been elevated to a principal player for Duran Duran’s predecessor, Liberty, played a critical part in the song’s construction. Ordinary World emerged relatively early in sessions for the album, and its razor-sharp melodic hook gave the band confidence that they were on the right track. Le Bon’s assured vocal is among his best, and the track, picked as the obvious first single from the 1993 album billed Duran Duran (but largely referred to as “The Wedding Album”), was an immediate hit with critics. It’s one of those everyman songs with lyrics that anyone can identify with: the acknowledgement of what has been lost paired with a fragile confidence in the ability to step forward. Ordinary World was written by lead singer Simon Le Bon about his late friend David Miles and struck a chord with some of the political angst of that era. With dance and grunge music at the apex of cultural and commercial momentum, there seemed little space for a band now a decade into a career that had seen them transform from new-wave pioneers to New Romantic titans and then, latterly, musical magpies, rifling through different genres as they pleased. And we never have to forget.Duran Duran’s beloved ballad Ordinary World came at a critical crossroads for the group, as the fragmentation of the music scene at the end of the 80s and early 90s witnessed a brutal disregard for much that had gone before. Nothing is perfect, but we have to get through and power on. But all I can do is move on, and know that she loves me and I love her flaws and all, and that is enough. I kept telling myself, our relationship will get better when X, or I will try harder later. Maybe things that were always lingering with a thought of "we can fix that later." Maybe that is why Simon took this particular loss so hard. Also seems like their was some sort of strain on their relationship, maybe things that could have been different. I know Simon wrote this for a friend that died, and it makes perfect sense. I could sense her saying to me, "you will be okay, life will go on" through this song. I was looking for a song to use for her picture slideshow and this was perfect. I always thought I "got" what it was saying, but it never made more sense as when my Mom passed away. This has always been my favorite Duran Duran song, and my Mom's as well. I guess we all live and learn, it was really hard to hear these lyrics at that time. ![]() Ours truly was just a little sorrow, but man did it hurt. Well, I moved on, found my place in the world, got married, and lived happily ever after, she did as well. I had to find my "Ordinary World" so to speak. I knew I screwed up, I knew I would never see her again, and I knew that some how I had to learn from this huge mistake, move on, and be a better person after learning this lesson. I lost the person I love and my best friend as well, because I did something so amazingly wrong. ![]() It was the first time I really listened to the words. I remember being in a hotel room, waiting for my new apartment to be ready, and this video came on. it forever became the anthem of this screwed up time in my life in upstate new york. This song was just coming out at the time, and I saw the video. This song brings back a very sad time in my life.ģ days before I was supposed to get married, it all blew up. I turned on the lights, the TV, and the radio Came in from a rainy Thursday on the avenue
